Evan McMullin, a Independent conservative presidential candidate, told CNN that he's received death threats following robo-calls claiming that he's gay.
The robo-calls were being delivered to voters in Utah, where McMullin is expected to receive about 20 percent of the vote, threatening Donald Trump's lead in the state. McMullin is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), which is based in Utah.
According to The Daily Beast, voters in the state are receiving a robo-call from William Johnson, a white nationalist, who warns against voting for McMullin because he might be secretly gay.
“Hello, my name is William Johnson,” Johnson says in the call. “I am a farmer and a white nationalist. I make this call against Evan McMullin and in support of Donald Trump.”
“Evan has two mommies,” he continues. “His mother is a lesbian, married to another woman. Evan is okay with that. Indeed Evan supports the Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage. Evan is over 40 years old and is not married and doesn't even have a girlfriend. I believe Evan is a closeted homosexual.”
A Trump spokesperson has condemned the calls.
Appearing on CNN, McMullin said that he had “received some death threats from these white supremacists … They've attacked my family.”
“Donald Trump himself has bragged about sexually assaulting women and attacking people for the color of their skin and their faith. I mean, this is the Republican nominee and none of this should surprise any of us,” McMullin said.
