This is how Google searches portray LGBT people

This is how Google searches portray LGBT people

This is you, right?
This is you, right?
Google has a unique power to shape people’s perceptions.
Often, it’s the very first place people go to research something.
Countless young LGBT people take their first steps out the closet using the search engine – typing ‘gay’ before they’d dare tell a real person, or looking for transition tips online.
However, the search engine is not perfect – and the algorithm-based images search seems to have learnt a few lessons from humanity in terms of negative stereotyping.
Here’s what comes up if you search for some common LGBT terms… and how Google portrays you.

Gay

(Suggestions: Are you sure you didn’t want to laugh at some homophobic ‘gay’ jokes? Here’s some homophobic ‘gay’ jokes.)
You are a man. Definitely a white man. Why would you be searching for ‘gay’ if you’re not a white man?
All gay people have muscles and six packs, never wear clothes, and look promiscuous in public places. Being gay also means you dress up as women for fun, obviously.
Also, Nigel Farage doesn’t like you. Take it up with him.

Lesbians

‘Lesbians’? Oh, you’re probably a man looking to get off. Here’s some porn. Lesbians only exist to get men off.

Lesbian

(Suggestions: Did you mean ‘butch lesbian’? We keep those separately, and you won’t find any unless you specifically ask.)
You’re an actual lesbian? Oh right, okay then… you’re white, have long hair and wear make-up.
You also like having lots of sex in public places. Being a lesbian’s a bit trendy, so we’ve put everything in black-and-white, just like your Instagram filters.
Cara Delenvinge is also one of you. She might claim to be ‘bi-sexual’ or something, but we know better. Here she is.

Bisexual

Nice try, but we’ve rumbled you. You are a flag. You only exist in flag form.
People might claim that ‘bisexuals’ exist, but really they’re just big ol’ flags.
(Suggestions: Did you mean bisexual PEOPLE? I mean, I guess we have some stock images…)

Trans

(Suggestions: What?! Did you mean Trains? Transformers? You should be more careful when you type.)
Ooh, ooh, we know this one! You’re that cool Austrian diva who won Eurovision. She was trans, right?
She had a dress and beard and everything, so she must be. Here you go. Sorted.
We also have a few posh white dudes playing you in films. And Michelle Obama… Joan Rivers said it so it must be true!

Shy Shelter Dog Has The Best Reaction To Being Adopted

Shy Shelter Dog Has The Best Reaction To Being Adopted [Watch]

This adorable pup didn’t know what to think when he had visitors but became elated when he realized he was being adopted.

In many nations across the world, an alarming number of cats and dogs are euthanized before they are able to find their furrever home. In the United States, for example, 2.4 million cats and dogs are put down every year, which is about  one every thirteen seconds. Fortunately, some animals get to experience the miracle of adoption, and 8-month-old Benny is one of them. The young pit bull was one of the many abandoned dogs being cared for at Carson Animal Care Center, a high-kill shelter, in Gardena, California. For weeks, nobody was interested in adopting the shy but sweet pup – until the right family came along.

On December 10th, Benny’s life was spared. You can see in the video above how excited the adorable pup became when he realized he was leaving the shelter for good. Before you adopt a furry friend from a pet store or a breeder, consider rescuing a lovely dog or cat from a local shelter. You could make them as happy as Benny, and benefit greatly in the process. What are your thoughts? Comment below and share this news!

Declassified: US secretly told Japan that USSR downed Korean Boeing in 1983 by mistake

Declassified: US secretly told Japan that USSR downed Korean Boeing in 1983 by mistake

RT | December 24, 2015
Back in 1983, the US secretly informed Japan that a Korean Air Boeing-747 was downed over the Soviet Union by mistake, a declassified document reveals. Officially, Washington always accused Moscow of intentionally shooting down the passenger jet.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry has declassified diplomatic documents over 30 years old regarding one of the worst air crashes in history, the downing of the Korean Air Lines’ Boeing 747-230B over Sakhalin Island, USSR, on September 1, 1983, reports TASS.
Tokyo has revealed that two months after the catastrophe, a high-ranking official of the US administration confidentially informed Japan’s diplomats that the Soviet Union had mistaken the ill-fated aircraft for an American reconnaissance plane.
The same US official also informed that Washington intended to locate and fish up the black boxes of the downed passenger jet using some sort of “secret means,” but the USSR was first to do so.
For decades, Washington and the international community have been insisting that the catastrophe that claimed 269 lives took place because Soviet Air Force deliberately shot down the passenger liner.
Now that the wraps have been taken off some of Japanese diplomatic documents of 1970s and ’80s, it has been revealed that the US always knew what happened to the ill-fortune Korean passenger aircraft.
On September 1, 1983, Korean Air flight KE007 undertook its regular route from New York to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska.
After taking off from Anchorage, the Boeing held a course for the South Korean capital, but for some still not decisively known reason severely, by 500km, deviated from its course, flying over the Kamchatka Peninsula and Sakhalin, territories where the Soviet Union had multiple military bases and other secretive installations.
It must be noted that KE007 was approaching Soviet airspace simultaneously with a Boeing RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, and at a certain point the radar marks of the two aircraft merged. Later on, one of these marks on military radars entered Soviet airspace.
Throughout the flight, the KAL Boeing was flying with navigation lights out and withstood from establishing radio contact with the Soviet Sukhoi Su-15 fighter jets that took off to intercept the intruder, with the intention to force it make a landing on a Soviet airfield.
The Soviet military pilots that approached the intruder could not identify the aircraft visually from a distance of several kilometers because it was too dark and they could not believe that a plane without identification that had just passed a restricted airspace over Kamchatka could be some sort of passenger liner.
Once it became obvious that the suspected reconnaissance aircraft was going to escape with the data obtained, the Soviet pilots were ordered to shoot down the intruder aircraft.
The South Korean Boeing dived into La Perouse Strait, which separates Sakhalin from Hokkaido Island, Japan, near the small island of Moneron, also belonging to the USSR.
The catastrophe considerably worsened relations between the Soviet Union and the US and broader international community.
The International Civil Aviation Association (ICAO) investigating the incident concluded that Korean pilots had incorrectly preset the autopilot.
Moscow has always insisted that the downed jet was performing a reconnaissance flight over the restricted area of the Soviet airspace in order to expose technical parameters of the air defense installations in the area.

British English Vs American English

Click here to join World Malayali Club
Given that there are 65 countries in the world that have made English their official language, between them there are bound to be some differences that crop up, take the UK and USA for example. Despite them being incredibly similar there are still a lot of noticeable differences between the two versions of english that they choose to use which can lead to some confusion at times.

Luckily however the US State Department have created a series of illustrated infographics that help make things a little clearer.

Congress Quietly Ends Federal Prohibition On Medical Marijuana

Great news! A provision ending the federal prohibition on medical marijuana, banning federal agents from policing its users or raiding dispensaries in any state or district where it is legal, was just passed by Congress.
The provision can be found in Congress’ new 1,603-page spending plan.
Mainstream media may be quiet about this latest news, but you can guarantee the little passage will radically alter the way America treats – and views – the use of medical marijuana.
The spending plan, with the medical pot provision within it, became law when President Obama signed it last Friday, reports the LA Times.
Up until now, police could still prosecute people for using or distributing medical marijuana – even in states that had legalized it, because federal law designated cannabis in any form as an illegal drug. As you know, federal law takes precedent over state law.
A massive shift has now taken place. Reportedly, even Republicans were more inclined to support a less strict federal drug policy.
Said Bill Piper, a lobbyist with the Drug Policy Alliance:
“The war on medical marijuana is over. Now the fight moves on to legalization of all marijuana.”
At present, thirty-two of the 50 states and the District of Columbia have already legalized some form of marijuana use, or its ingredients, for medication.
For this reason, the new law “is a victory for so many,” says Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a Californian Republican and co-author of the provision.
“This is […] the first time in decades that the federal government has curtailed its oppressive prohibition of marijuana.”
The benefits of cannabis are numerous, which is why the herb needs to be legally available in every state. Studies have shown that cannabis oil helps treat everything from glaucoma and multiple sclerosis to nerve and seizure disorders, and chronic pain. In addition, hemp is not only a nutritious food (hemp seed), the crop can be used to make clothes, building materials, and fuel – among other uses.

Federal judge rules Title IX applies to sexual orientation discrimination

Federal judge rules Title IX applies to sexual orientation discrimination

[JURIST] A judge for the US District Court for the Central District of California [official website] ruled [order] Tuesday that sexual orientation discrimination is prohibited under a law that protects gender-based discrimination. The order pertains to the motion to dismiss brought by Pepperdine University challenging two female students' claims that the school's basketball coach wanted them removed from the team because they were dating. In the order, District Judge Dean Pregerson ruled that the Title IX act of 1972 [text] does provide for protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation. Pregerson stated that "[i]f Plaintiffs had been males dating females, instead of females dating females, they would not have been subjected to the alleged different treatment." As a result of the ruling, the case may now move forward to trial.
Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity has been a controversial issue in the US. In November President Barack Obama's expressed support [JURIST report] for legislation that would ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity through an amendment to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In July 2014 Obama signed an executive order [text] barring federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity [JURIST report] but, despite pressure, did not include any exemptions for religious organizations. In November 2013 the US Senate approved [JURIST report] the Employment Non-Discrimination Act [text], a bill outlawing workplace discrimination against gay, bisexual and transgender Americans, by a vote of 64 to 32, but it has made no progress in the House of Representatives.

Are Animals Capable of Counting?

Research using nectar has shown that honeybees can count up to the number
four.

There is evidence that a variety of creatures, from insects to primates,
can recognize number patterns. Perhaps the closest examples of animals that
are capable of counting in a way similar to humans are monkeys and lemurs,
who have been observed demonstrating proficiency in ordinal relations, or
ordering numbers from lowest to highest. A study has even indicated that
honey bees are able to perform basic counting. An experiment in which
nectar was placed within a tunnel with numbered markers and then removed
showed that honeybees would return to where the nectar was by counting up
to four markers.

Six GOP Candidates Pledge to Support New Law to Allow LGBT Discrimination
Inline image 1

A conservative proposal that would legalize LGBT discrimination disguised as protecting religious liberty now has the support of all but two of the remaining Republican presidential candidates, and six have signed a pledge promising to push to get it enacted within heir first 100 days in the White House, if they are elected.
Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina, Rick Santorum, and Mike Huckabee are backing the First Amendment Defense Act, reported Think Progress. The legislation as written would stop the federal government from interfering with people or businesses which believe, according to supporters, that “marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman” or that “sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.”
Three conservative groups support the pledge: the American Principles Project, Heritage Action for America, and Family Research Council Action.
In addition, Jeb Bush,Lindsey Graham, Rand Paul, and Donald Trump “have publicly expressed support for FADA,” said Maggie Gallagher, Senior Fellow at American Principles Project, in a statement.
No word from Chris Christie or John Kasich, governors of New Jersey and Ohio, respectively.
Think Progress reported FADA gives people and businesses license to openly discriminate against same sex couples.  The American Civil Liberties Union called it “a Pandora’s Box of taxpayer-funded discrimination against same-sex couples and their children.”

Armed gang using gay dating app Grindr to target and rob men in London

Armed gang using gay dating app Grindr to target and rob men in London

Detective Constable Sheree Yates from Croydon police said the victims did not suffer any serious physical injuries but were left "very shaken".

Police in London have warned that an armed gang is using Grindr – the gay dating app – to lure in unsuspecting men before robbing them.
Two victims were robbed at knifepoint, in separate attacks, by a group of four men after making contact through the gay dating app. It is believed that the same group of men were involved in both of the incidents.
Grindr is a dating app that allows gay men to search for other men who are located close to their proximity. According to the company’s statistics, around two million people worldwide use the app on a daily basis.
Senior Detective Constable Sheree Yates from Croydon Police told the BBC that the victims did not suffer any serious physical injuries but have been left “very shaken” by the incidents.
She added: "We are keen to identify the suspects as soon as possible and are appealing to anyone with any information to contact the police.
"I would urge everyone who uses online dating apps and sites to take steps to help them to stay safe whilst meeting strangers."
A spokesperson for Grindr urged users of the app to treat the platform with a “measure of caution” as they would with any other social interaction.
They added: "There are many ways to verify and take steps to protect yourself, from meeting in more public spaces to getting phone numbers and speaking beforehand. We take these matters very seriously and cooperate with local law enforcement at all turns where we can."
Croydon police have in the meantime released safety tips for those in the area using dating apps:
  • Always meet in a public place with lots of people around
  • Don't share personal details until you trust the person with whom you are communicating
  • If you decide to meet in person, let someone know where you are going and when you're likely to return
  • Plan your journey to and from the date in advance. If using a mini-cab, always pre-book
  • Drink responsibly and never leave your drink unattended
  • Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and working
  • If at any time you feel uncomfortable, leave the date - you are not obliged to stay
